One of best parts about trading for a living is that you can do it from anywhere in the world. For profitable trading on the road, you need to treat trading like a job. This is not a vacation but a lifestyle so you need to be able to make money while you’re away. You need to have the right equipment to give yourself the best opportunity at success. Here are some crucial tools you need to trade profitably on the road:
Portable Monitors
I know there are traders out there who trade with only 1 screen successfully. But there is no denying that less screens means you are watching less stocks. You do not want to let the lack of screens cause you to miss a big move because you didn’t have screen space for all the stocks on your watchlist. I always bring at least 1 portable monitor when I’m traveling. These USB ASUS monitors are the ones I use and they have worked great for me. They are fragile. Be sure to protect them properly when you pack them.
Gaming Laptop
Gaming laptops are the best laptops for trading, but you can get by with cheaper PC’s as well. Gaming laptops have enough processing power to handle all of the trading software smoothly. I’ve traded on a Mac before, but all trading software works best with a PC. ASUS makes some great gaming laptops, which you can check out here.
Supplements
These supplements are very important when traveling from me. It is much easier to eat unhealthy foods and exercise less when you are traveling and visiting new places. For this reason I bring a supplement called Athletic Greens. When you are trading you want to be at peak performance. Making sure your body has the right nutrients is crucial before a long trading session, and taking athletic greens daily is an easy way to make sure you do.
The Right Environment
When you are booking accommodation, you have to make sure you will stay in an environment conducive to successful trading. Always thoroughly research wherever you are going to stay beforehand. On Airbnb, one of the amenities you can see is “Laptop Friendly Work-Space”. You should also ask your host for information about their WiFi speed. You don’t want any surprises about your trading environment right before you arrive.
When we went to Tulum earlier this year, we stayed at a crazy mansion on the beach as you see below. Unfortunately the WiFi was horrible so we had to go into town every day to trade.
Hotspot
When there is uncertainty about what the WiFi situation will be like, bring a hotspot as a backup. I usually prefer to trade on a hotspot, especially when the only alternative is public WiFi. This also helps eliminate hacking risk. One of my students lost six figures from someone who hacked his account while he was trading on the WiFi at a Starbucks. Don’t take the chance by trading on public WiFi, especially when in a 1st world country. Always bring a hotspot whenever you are traveling.
